What We Care About

Our core focus at Waterville Community Church is Learning Love. Below are the shared values and practices that help us live out that core focus.

Be With Jesus

Our first value is to Be with Jesus. We're not interested in just learning things about Jesus. We're interested in learning from him. We don't want information about Jesus. We want to adopt his way of life. To do that, we believe we have to spend time with Jesus. The more time we spend with him, the more our lives will begin to imitate his. While there are lots of things we encourage people to do privately to be with Jesus, the core practice we associate with our first value is our Sunday morning gathering. Jesus said that when two or more people gather in his name he is there among them. Sunday morning is where Jesus is with us, and we with him.

Become Like Jesus

Our second value is to Become Like Jesus. The point of being with Jesus is that we might become like him, adopting his way of life as our own. This often takes intentional space outside Sunday mornings where we can wrestle more directly and concretely with the implications of his life and teachings. The core practice we associate with the value to Become Like Jesus is what we call Formation Groups. Formation Groups are small group spaces designed around specific conversation topics, issues, or practices. They're offered once each semester and typically last six weeks.

Do As Jesus Did

Our third value is to Do as Jesus Did. If the point of Being with Jesus is that we might Become Like Jesus, we express that likeness by doing the kinds of things Jesus did. Maybe not preaching to thousands of people or performing miracles, but giving our lives away to and for the world, serving others rather than being served by them. So, the core practice we associate with the value to Do as Jesus Did is serving. We talk with people about serving in two different capacities, what we call Serving the Church and Serving the World

Integrate All Things

Our last value is to Integrate All Things. It's easy in our culture to treat Jesus like he's one influence among many, leaving Christian people disintegrated; God important in some areas of life but not others. We believe God IS love and we want to see people living with Jesus as Lord, in charge of every dimension of their lives. The core practice we associate with the value to Integrate All Things is Spiritual Guidance. We have people in our church who have been trained in the practice of spiritual guidance available to meet regularly with anyone needing or wanting that kind of spiritual friendship. Spiritual guides are not counselors. Their role is to help you follow God, to integrate your life in Christ.
